Formulas & How to Use This Calculator
Core formula
Tax = Order × Rate%
Supporting formula
Collect only where nexus or thresholds bite
How to use — step by step
- Enter your order value ($) and rate (%) — use last-90-day carrier or supplier figures, not quotes.
- Add the remaining cost lines honestly, including the fixed payment slice and a 3–5% returns reserve.
- Set monthly volume to unlock break-even and monthly totals.
- Read the headline result, then check the proportional breakdown bars for the biggest cost slice.
- Compare the Growth-plan target against your margin and adjust packaging, zones or threshold.
- Copy or print the breakdown for your pricing sheet and re-check monthly.

Beyond the basics — the concepts professionals use to price for profit across channels, seasons, and competitors.
VAT-inclusive vs sales-tax-exclusive: know your lane
UK and EU prices must include VAT: a £60 tag at 20% nets £50 before any other cost — enter the net figure as your price target. US prices list pre-tax with sales tax added at checkout where you hold nexus. Mixing the conventions silently deletes 10–20% of margin, so the calculators separate inclusive extraction from exclusive addition explicitly.
Marketplace facilitator laws changed everything
In most US states and for EU OSS/IOSS, the marketplace (Amazon, eBay, Etsy) collects and remits sales tax or VAT on your behalf — but not everywhere, and never corporate income tax. Track where you have independent nexus (inventory, employees, thresholds) versus facilitator coverage, and model the gap SKUs where you still collect.
Tax-adjusted profit is the only profit
A 40% gross margin at a 21% profit-tax rate is 31.6% after tax — and VAT/GST timing gaps eat working capital in between. Run tax-adjusted profit on every pricing decision: revenue minus costs minus indirect tax handling minus income-tax provision. Decisions on pre-tax profit systematically overstate by a fifth.
Thresholds trigger duties overnight
US economic nexus near $100k sales, EU OSS distance-selling rules, UK £85k VAT registration, and import de-minimis limits ($800 US, €150 EU) flip obligations the moment you cross them. Calendar the thresholds against forecast revenue so registration, pricing and checkout collection switch on before penalties do.
GST, VAT and sales tax are not interchangeable
VAT/GST cascades with input credits (you reclaim VAT paid on costs); US sales tax pyramids without them (tax paid on inputs sticks). International pricing must therefore model VAT as a pass-through with timing cost, but US sales tax as a pure checkout add-on — the calculators treat each mechanism natively.
Platform Playbooks: Amazon, Shopify, Etsy & eBay
Fee structures differ by channel — here is how to adapt one base price per marketplace without losing margin.
Amazon
Marketplace facilitator collection in most US states plus VAT calculation services in the UK/EU. Model the SKUs and states outside facilitator coverage, where your own registration and filing still apply.
Shopify
Native tax engines plus apps (Avalara, TaxJar) for nexus tracking and filing. Price US lists pre-tax and UK/EU lists VAT-inclusive from the same catalog with per-market tax behavior.
Etsy
Etsy collects US sales tax and UK/EU VAT on most orders automatically — verify digital-goods and offsite-ads edge cases where treatment differs, and keep records for income-tax deductions.
eBay
eBay collects across US facilitator states and UK/EU imports undervenue rules. Managed-payments payouts arrive net of marketplace-collected tax — reconcile gross-to-net so revenue is never overstated.
Glossary: Pricing Terms Explained

- Tax-inclusive
- Displayed price already containing VAT/GST — divide out for net.

Common Pricing Mistakes & Pro Tips
Mistakes that kill margin
- Listing UK/EU prices pre-VAT — 20% of revenue was never yours.
- Assuming marketplaces cover every state — gap SKUs need own collection.
- Pricing on pre-tax profit — income tax takes a fifth off the top.
- Missing nexus thresholds until penalty letters arrive.
- Treating VAT like sales tax — input credits change the real burden.
- Forgetting import VAT timing gaps in working-capital forecasts.
Pro tips to grow profit
- List UK/EU VAT-inclusive, US pre-tax — never mix conventions.
- Map nexus vs facilitator coverage state by state, yearly.
- Decide on tax-adjusted profit, never pre-tax margin.
- Calendar every threshold against forecast revenue.
- Reclaim input VAT/GST — it is a timing cost, not a real cost.
- Automate calculation past $500k revenue — manual breaks.
