Body Mass Index (BMI) has been used for decades as a quick health screening tool. But modern health science recognizes its significant limitations.
What BMI Gets Right
BMI is a convenient, low-cost screening tool for population-level studies. It correlates reasonably well with body fat percentage at the group level and can flag potential weight-related health risks.
Where BMI Falls Short
- Muscle vs. Fat: Athletes and bodybuilders often have high BMIs despite very low body fat
- Age and Gender: BMI doesn't account for age-related muscle loss or differences between male and female body composition
- Ethnicity: People of Asian and South Asian descent may have higher health risks at lower BMIs
- Distribution: BMI doesn't measure where fat is stored — visceral fat is more dangerous than subcutaneous fat
Better Metrics to Track
- Waist-to-hip ratio
- Body fat percentage
- Resting heart rate
- Blood pressure
- Blood glucose levels
