Formula

FV = P×(1+r/n)^(n×t) + PMT×(((1+r/n)^(n×t) − 1)/(r/n)). Doubling time ≈ 72 ÷ annual percent.

Continuous compounding: FV = P×e^(r×t).

How it works

Enter a starting balance, a recurring contribution, an annual return, a horizon, and a compounding frequency. The engine grows the lump sum with full compounding and grows each contribution from its deposit date, then sums both legs. Monthly contributions at 12× compounding therefore earn interest in the same month they land, while annual contributions wait a full year.

Assumptions

  • Constant annual return every year; no volatility sequence or fees.
  • Contributions at the end of each period; returns credited at period-end.
  • Nominal dollars; inflation adjustment shown separately where offered.

Frequently asked questions

What compounding frequency should I choose?

Match the account: US savings accounts usually compound daily but credit monthly — monthly is the honest modelling choice; CDs often compound daily.

Who uses the compound growth calculator?

It is used by savers planning deposits, by advisers comparing account yields, and by households pacing a savings to a deadline. It sits in the Interest & Compounding group of the Compound Interest & Savings section of Atlascalcs.

How accurate is the compound growth calculator?

Every figure follows directly from the inputs using standard compounding mathematics, so it is accurate to the quality of the values you enter. Banks round interest and apply their own day-count and crediting rules, so expect small differences against a formal statement or maturity advice.

Do these calculators include taxes and inflation?

No — figures are before tax and in nominal terms. For a real-terms view, subtract your marginal tax drag and expected inflation from the rate before entering it.
